The problem

The problem is that the effort of the majority of players is quiete irrelevant for the match result, only a small minority of off-time players decides the outcome of matches. (aka night/morning/day-capping)

This is the consequence of the fact that the amount of objective points available to capture for scoring is always equal, i.e. independent of the no of players that currently play WvW. Of cource the fewer people are in WvW, the easier is it for a side to dominate and the fewer people are in WvW, the easier is it achieve a major imbalance in scoring. While you need to be really good to achieve a 300:200:200 in prime-time for more than 1 tick, a 500:100:100 over several ticks is quite common in off-time.

As a consequence only a minority of players decides match results and by that dominate the majority of players.
The main-time players are discriminated with respect to off-time players in several aspects:
- they cannot play immediately but have to wait in a queue
- their effort is much less relevant (sometimes even irrelevant) for match result
- they are less worthy for the server

Especially the last point can be seen in many recruitement threads: If you are an off-time player we warmly welcome you, if you mainly play in prime-time stay away, we cannot hinder you, but we don’t want you.

The negative consequences

concentration As only a few servers have good off-time coverage (by definition the number of off-time players is smaller, or the off-time would turn into a prime-time), people that care about winning and loosing a match concentrate on these few server.

indifference You hear more and more
- "I better do not care about points, … "
- “I’ve no influence on winning or loosing”
- “Why should I spend money for upgrades/defensive siege, it will be gone when I go to bed.”
- ….
Over time such helplessness demotivates people to play WvW/Guildwars2.

imbalance
Server are different in their time-profile (caused by culture or by different time-zone majorities). As the rating of a server is based on performance averaged over time.
Very imbalanced matches may result. A example of this was Baruch Bay in the EU-ladder. Matches with them where nearly never balanced (e.g. see graphic in
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/matchups/SFR-Kodash-Baruch/2254763). They dominated when others where sleeping, and they were dominated other times of the day.
But the amount of time with interesting fights was very limited, therefore the resulting matches where quite imbalanced (and therefore boring) most of the time.

overcommitment followed by burn-out
During the league several server were overcommited to off-time play as this is the way to win a match. E.g. Jade Sea and Baruch Bay achieved league results much better than their pre- and post-league results by strong commitment resulting in strong off-time forces that decided the matches for them. Unfortunatly overcommitment has a price, namely that of burn-out. Baruch Bay fell into a very deep hole after league and jade sea felt into one as well. People feelt un-rewarded for their (over-)commitment and quite a lot, were not seen in WvW (or even GW2) since the league.

I made (or contributed) to several posts that were moved to the general Suggestions subforum, however in mot cases they got lost there very fast, having them moved away from WvW subform ended discussion of the suggestion nearly immediately.

So i am always a bit undecided when I see a post being moved to general Suggestions.
- is this like a promotion (moderator saw it as valuable proposal)
- is this like a move to trash (move it out of the sight to end the discussion)

Now that we have several WvW sub forums how about one for
“WvW Suggestions”?

Again I can assure you, the developers are reading the forums regularly, even though they don’t have time to post a reply to everything they read. Additionally, as I read these forums probably more than anybody here, I regularly compile reports for the competitive team to make sure they are up to speed on your concerns and desires.

Maybe the main problem of the WvW forum is that it get’s only negative feedback from ANet.

If you troll, necro, be rude, be negative you sooner or later get feedback from ANet. Negative feedback of course, but feedback.

If you are constructive, propose or discuss matter it looks like you are ignored. If you summarize thread for the developers or developers read threads, how about some positive feedback: “Thanks for this interesting discussion”.

People obviously want feedback on the things they do in the forum, and if only negative things get feedback people become more negative.

solution proposals

prerequisits None of the following proposals violates the two essentials of WvW as set by ANet:
- 24/7 availability of WvW
- no discimination of player from any time-zone of the world

1) Weighting of the score by number of participants

Compute the mean total (sum all sides) number of players inside WvW within the ticker-time-frame. Multiply the ticker-score by this number (divided by a fix constant ~400 to scale to the current score-range) i.e. the more people fight for the points the more worthy is each point, but every player is equally important every prime-time player has the same weight as every off-time player.

2) Limit the objective/score by number of participants

a) Overal limit
Compute the mean total (sum all sides) number of players inside WvW within the ticker-time-frame. No side can get a score higher than this number.

b) Limit by map
Compute the mean total (sum all sides) number of players inside WvW on this map within the ticker-time-frame. No side can get a score higher from this map than this number.

This adds some strategic aspects about distribution of players over maps. A large blob jumping to a map with only a few controlled objectives earns less points than a force distributed according to already owned objectives.

c) Limit by objective

Each objective needs a minimal human player garrision (mean over time) to count for the score. The required garrision depends on the value of the objective. E.g. SM needs 35/5 = 7 people to count, a supply camp (inside the area of the circle) needs 5/5 = 1.

This adds some strategic decisions. Do you want to score and defend or do you wana do an offensive at cost of score.

To find motivated garrisions: Succesful scoring of an objective is an event with a reward comparable to defense of a tower, it is granted to all that where at least 2/3 of the time (10 of the 15 min) inside the objective.

d) Revert un-occupied objectives to neutrality

It’s unreasonable that a handful of people can control a large area. And if an area is not controled it rewerts to neutrality (like SM at match-start). So each objective needs a minimal human player garrision (mean over time) to stay under this sides control. E.g. SM needs 35/5 = 7 people to keep control, a supply camp (inside the area of the circle) needs 5/5 = 1.

To find motivated garrisions: Succesful scoring of an objective is an event with a reward comparable to defense of a tower, it is granted to all that where at least 2/3 of the time (10 of the 15 min) inside the objective.

3) Better and More NPC activity

Each siege weapon placed (or build by upgrades like cannon and mortar) is automatically manned by a NPC as long as no human wants to man it.
All these weapons do auto-fire to any target in range of the weapon, with some intelligent priorisation (e.g. treb prefers to fire on trebs in range).

To make this work the siege limits need to be separated by objective (3 per area, with the following total: SM 100, keeps 75, towers 50, camps 25), they must not despawn, and sieges in the objective must be under the control of commited people. Asimple ay to ensure this is: Only people from the guild of the claimer can place and remove siege weapons inside this objective. A guild claim expires if no buf is provided and not at least one player of that guild is inside the objective.

4) partition the 24h into time-slices

Just have different leagues (or ranking) with different matches for the 3 mayor timezones (running in parallel, such that there is 24/7 a match you can join)!
Every server plays in three matches in three leagues during every week:
the league of 0-8 UTC โ€“ called NA-prime,
the league of 8-16 UTC โ€“ called Pacific-Prime,
the league of 16-24 โ€“ called EU-Prime.
At 8, 16, 24 UTC the matches are switched (new match maps restore from last save in the background, player on map and in queue moved to new match, and then maps of the suspended match saved).
There will be 24/7 WvW, and and in each time-slice each server will be matched against equally strong servers in that time-slice.

Alternatively instead of 3 slices a 8h, 4 slices a 6 hours or even 6 slices of 4 hours can be choosen.

For variance with a special league a weekend-slice-league and a weekday-slice-league can be made.

The main goal is reduce match time to managable amount. If I build up and garrision my tower till match switch, I am sure that I will find it in that state when my slice-match will resume. This should improve commitment of players/guild to the match-slice they choose for the week.

First of all: Very nice job with the removal of culling in WvW.
The view of battles really gain epic dimensions.
However, If I look at such a battle (or a screeny of it, e.g: https://forum-de.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/T2-Elonafels-Kodasch-Jademeer-KW-12/243920) I noticed 3 things I would like to be able to change:
1) Titles should not be in “friend-color”, as this makes it hard to see if there are friends in the enemy zerg.
2) It should be possible to switch title-display off, as it would be much easier to to see the enemy size, if all people have only 1 name-line and not 1-2 lines.
3) I would like to turn name-display for totally dead off. This would make it much easier to see, if this “hord of enemies” on this hill is dangerous, or a few living rezzing a lot of dead or only an “abandoned graveyard”.

I agree the server should get tickets according to their final rank:
gold 1) 2’000’000
gold 2) 1’950’000

gold 6) 1’800’000
silver 1) 1’750’000

silver 9) 1’350’000
bronze 1) 1’300’000

bronze 9) 900’000
Then distribute the tickets a server earned equally among all people that finished the league2 achievement on that server, e.g. if 10’000 people on blackgate finished the achievement and they ended 1. That’s 200 tickets per person.
If EB ended 24. and they had 1000 people finishing their achievement they get 900 each.

For that of course it would be better if all server would play in one large swiss-league. Then you could even distribute tickeckts to servers based on the points the earned in the 9 rounds (between 45 and 9), e.g. 50’000 tickets per point earned.

In EU I am surprised when I do NOT have outmanned buf (but it never last longer than a few minutes). The team with SFR has nearly always 3:1 superiority over both other teams since months.

Balance is more important than a new map and it’s broken since nearly a year:
Do something useful, ANet none cares about the JP boxes.

When will you recognize the current WvW/EotM-imbalance as that what it is:
A game-breaking bug that disables gameplay.

Comparing it to PvP: If all PvP-matches would be setup by the system to be 5 vs 2, how long would you need to recognize, search and fix the bug? A week? A month or as in WVW/EotM over a year?

Server-stacking and coverage war is non-sense, and has nothing to do with competition. ANet only makes another competition to earn some money from more transfers. Now that queues resulting from overstacking are no longer a problem, really everyone should go to the same server.

You have to be responsible for the actions you do/propose. If you think someone should be kicked, do it but be responsible for it and defend it if needed, or be kicked for it, if the others disagree. Anonymous kicking is to abusive as it harms others without own risk.
Its therefore a good change to lift the anonymity and it may lead to overthink if it is really the correct response to a mistake.

I don’t understand. As a guardian, you have just as much chance of getting silk (or any other mat) as any other profession. You don’t need to level an alt to get what you need for crafting. Silk is used across all professions, so you wouldn’t need to have a light or medium armor character to get silk.

Go read today’s update. They are making it more likely to get equipment you can use, meaning I will be getting more Mithril from salvaging heavy armor and less Silk because I’ll have less light armor.

The main problem with that is not the class and silk.

The main problem is (and always was) the level and linen, wool and cotton.
With my 8 lvl 80 char I never get enough of them, and always make a new char and level it such that it get during short 10 levels the stuff you need is the real mess.

Instead of the useless EXP boosters, I would like to get an EXP delayer.

Balance will never be the result of players choice.
History has clearly shown, that the opposite is true.
Player may stay even if outnumbered, but if they decide to move the large majority move to the winner side, increasing imbalance.

There are only two possible ways to reach more balance:

  • A hard cap set by ANet on the maximal number of players allowed to enter wvw for a side, i.e. It is just not possible to have above average numbers.
  • very strong individual rewards for being on an under populated world, e.g. all individual rewards ( drops, WEXP, Exp, karma, gold, tournament tickets …) are halved if you are on an over-stacked world (more than 10% above average) and doubled if you are on an under-stacked world (less than 10% below average).

I would like to have such an option to go to boss events again.
With the current 100+ at bosses they are just to boring to go there.

Somehow that can be even seen as selecting a difficulty level. Less populated a little bit more demanding.

  • broken since wtj-transfers before season 2
  • corrupted since a growing amount of people have accounts on several server

It’s overdue to get rid of servers. Just that ANet seems to have no idea.

The random-roll modification is only a temporary thing to have some variation in the match-making order. But your permanent rating is only modified by the outcome of matches.

Deviation you can see at https://leaderboards.guildwars2.com/de/na/wvw
it’s between 150-170 so the current maximal modification of your rank by the random roll is approx. 86

So TC with a predicted rank of 1942 after this weeks match (http://mos.millenium.org/na/matchups) may get a modified match rank of
2028 (roll a +1) till 1856 (roll a -1)
2028 (roll a +1) is behind the unmodified SoR with 2051, but SoR rolls a dice as well.
if it is between -0.26 and +1 SoR stays 3rd and T1 match is BG – JQ – SoR
if it is -1 till -0.27 SoR ends on 4th behind the +1 rolling TC and T1 match would be BG-JQ-TC

The roll also influence the color you get in a match. Currently JQ and BG will always be in T1, but if JQ rolls -1 and SoR rolls +1 then JQ is red and SoR is blue (or green).
If JQ rolls +1 and BG rolls -1 then JQ is green and BG blue (or red).

Transfer prices based on the population ANet is using are

  • 66% based on totally inactive player rotting In the cellar of your server since month or years.
  • 30% based on the server PvE population that has to choose a server, but hates to enter WvW and only does for map-completion and achievement/season reward hunting.
  • 4% active WvW player which are the only reason why these server still exist and transfers are made.

It happens often, but still it surprises me again and again, probably because I do not understand it.

There seem to be a not so small amount of players that always do the following

  1. Ask for a new game or new content to a game
  2. Buy it
  3. Notice they don’t want to play it
  4. Ask for buying the solution of the game
  5. Have nothing to do, so go back to 1

That’s fine for me, they pay the game I like to play
But can someone explain me, why people are doing that?

It is players that stack servers not ANET.
It is players that come on maps and shout wheres the ZERG not ANET.
It is players that create blobs not ANET .

Is it bad ,yes often ….It is clearly the choice of the majority players .
and I am sure if anet started telling people how to play limiting groups there would be a lot more screaming .

All you can do is hope more players change there style .

It’s the players that optimize their behavior according to the rules ANet has setup

But you may not like this optimum, therefore you ask for rule changes that allow nicer optima.

Disappointed - New matchups

I don t know why vizunah should care about this implementation.

They wanted to be No 1 at the “end of this matchup-system”.

And with all the effort they put into winning this week, it’s no longer the
“end of this matchup-system”. So they have to repeat it again next week and maybe second next week and …. And the last 2 weeks showed them that it is not that trivial to win T1 at moment. Especially should they have put so much effort into this week, that this can hardly be repeated next week.

Neither sellable to NPC, nor salvage. Stop throwing such garbage at players. The only thing that can still be made worser: “Enter the name of the item to really destroy it”.

Every single mob I slayed during the last 4 levels was more rewarding than this level up reward!

Introducing: Guild vs Guild leaderboards

Maybe ANet can support this relatively easy:

Place a new NPC in lion-arch beside the WvW-portals
- A guild-team can register there
- 2 registered teams can agree to do a match
- if they did both teams are ported to an empty new instance of a (south part of the) borderlands map
- an exit button let them go back to the lion-arch.

Would have 2 advantages:
- GvG does not distrurb Wvw, nor does WvW disturb GvG (directly or by producing laags)
- GvG can be done between guilds even when they do not have a WvW-match.

Dear god, i don’t miss this boss.
Marionette was actually the prototype of what is wrong with GW2.
Mass zerking in general is no fun for people over the age of 12

What I liked was that is wasn’t that much zerging as todays bosses, the 5 lanes split the zerg into 5 smaller one. and in the small arena you went with 4-5 people.

It’s entirely the player base that made these matchups exist.

Yes, it’s the players that move, but it’s ANet that make the rules.

And the rules are: More people win, and there is no penalty to concentration and a reward for winning.

Result: rather sooner than later all will be gone or concentrated on one server.

If you design a game, you have to foresee and counter that.

And if you are not able to foresee it, you should notice and correct it while it happens!

But all ANet seem to be able to do is: “WvW is so great lets make another competition”

Proposal for a new competive WvW

Problem:

WvW has no longer enough interested propulation to play competitive matches over 24/7 on 4 maps.
Real competition can only happen when teams have equal size, i.e. they have queue on all maps.
This is only the case for a few server during only a few hours of the week anymore.

Solution Proposal:

EB alone and 3 BLs together are setup as mega-server matches as current EotM already is. So we have all maps available for play 24/7 and the amout of copies of the maps depend on how many people want to play.

To enable competitive play and not only karma-train some of those matches are between teams that want competition.
The competition is based on a new kind of WvW-Guild (it operates like a guild, but every player can be in mostly one alliance and it’s stripped of all the PvE stufff and a player can be active in an alliance without having to change which guild he represents) called Alliance.

An alliance can have up to 1000 members, it has an alliance chat always visible to all alliance whenever they are logged into GW2 and haven’t deselected it in the chat-window.

Instead of last loggin (as for guilds) the member list shows amount of hours in (on map plus in queue) of last trainig and last competition match and if this is 0 which match the player last partcipated in.

New alliances can be build by anyone, it cost 10000 gems to do so. They start with 1500 glicko points, an alliance that falls below 1000 glicko points is dissolved.

Matches are played on either

  • EB map (around 120 people per team),
  • 3 BL maps (around 240 people per team), or
  • EotM map (around 100 people per team)

Matches have a duration of 4 hours, on EB/BLs matches start with T2 (walls and doors already upgraded once), such that you loose something if you do not defend it and you have a chance to reach WPs during the short period of the match.

Each day has 6 slots a 4 hours (for EU I would recommend an alignment with 19:00-23:00 C(S)ET as a slot, no idea whats primetime for NA), and every alliance can register for every slot up to 1 week ahead. You can see how many alliances already registered for each slot. During registration you can distribute 6 bid-points for the 3 maps. You always play together as alliance when you registered for a match. If your opponents are registered alliances as well, you play a glicko-ranking-match, if at least one team is a random-team (as the number of alliances is not always devidable by 3) you only play a training match without influence on your ranking. An alliance which did not played a rank match during the week has a higher preference to be matched into one, than an alliance that already did. If your alliance did not played any ranking match during a week you loose 100 glicko-points. (If you are at 1500 and do not play for 5 weeks you are dissolved.)

So we have 3 types of matches:

  • all three teams are registered alliances -> ranking match (map-bid points are addded over the 3 teams, the map with highest bid is selected)
  • all three teams are mega-server-random-teams -> fun and 24/7 availability of WvW
  • 1 mixed match, a training for the alliance, a chalange for the mega-server-random-team(s)

Ranking matches cost 100gems (or gold) registration, if you end in a mixed match you get them back. If you end in a ranking match the gems are refounded according to the result score. Each team gets as many % of the 300gems (or gold) it reaches % of the total score. (if scores are: 2500, 5000, 7500, the total is 15000 team 2 has 1/3 so it gets 100gems, team 1 has 1/6 so it get 50gems, team3 has 1/2 so it get 150gems). The main reason for this is: If you register but do not show up you loose your gems.

Why imbalanced season after season?

A tournament season could be the highlight of the (half) year, but only if the teams are balanced.

There are mostly 3 servers per league on par, everyone else is just there to get crushed. And in most leagues the winner was clear from the beginning. This of course is a setting where any tournament is annoying and not interesting.

It has a reason why the number of member is fixed in any sports league. Who would be interested in watching a football game of 100 vs 10 more than once in a lifetime? (Once can be funny, but week after week?)

Please ANet balance the teams first, then make a next league

Tournaments only work with balanced teams, without any balancing factor in game design they only lead to more imbalance season by season, as more and more people are an annoyed being overrun and move to the winners, increasing imbalance.

Yesterday I faced another attack on my Left Mouse button!

To craft the Hylek-weapon collection you need 1425 sun beads.
75 per weapon and they have absolutely no other sense in the game.
Neverthenless the karma-merchant sells them only one by one.

So I really wonder what drove the designer to make it the way it is.
75 buy clicks per weapon 1425 buy-clicks for the collection.

If it is used only in stacks of 75, why isn’t it sold in stacks of 75?

Some elements of the game are really anoying mouse-killing. Hard to see any other reason than sponsoring of mouse producers in them.

In seasons there are these tickets and season 2 said first place get more than last place.
Season 3 said, the more you win the more you get. And always including off season, you get the WEXP bonus boxes, more for winning than for loosing.

Not much, but obviously already enough to to speed up the natural concentration process, originating in people’s preference to win and not to loose.

Because acquisition and holding requires different amount of players and happens at different times.

E.g.: color the map with 100 people, then all but 1 scout log out of WvW (e.g. to roam on EotM) to score 10 times the objectives they control.

When does WvW Color Switch?

Yes color changes when WvW matches are made. That’s every Friday 20:00-20:15 CEST for EU.

Color is strongly influenced by ranking, but since may 2013 it also has a small random elements. And this random element made SFR blue this week and not green. (See e.g. https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/EotM-Green-is-King/4361800 for the details.)

On the 12. Sept the 3rd season starts. During the season your color is fully determined by season rank (with is different from off-seasons Glicko rank). Expect SFR to be green for the 4 weeks season following 12. September.

Disappointed - New matchups

I’ve an idea:

You take a coin for (+ or -) and a 10-sided dice for (0.0 – 0.9).

You still have 8 hours to manually roll out the new EU-matches and then some more times for the NA matches.

And coins and dices are debugged since centuries

You still not got it, it’s not EU-T1 that fail to go down, it’s not EU-T2 that fail to go up it’s not NA-T8, it’s not any tiers failure.

It is the abuse of Glicko-2 by ANet that lead to this situation.

By definition every up/down of a server increases the distance between the two involved tiers. And this continues till there will be no up and down whatever you
do in your tier. And after 8 month of Glicko-2 abuse this state is mostly reached.

It’s really funny that ANet finished a WEB-page for the WvW-Ranking at a moment where it already was totally meaningless.

They won’t get mega paid, if anything the price of cloth will drop to be inline with leather and mithril (as cloth users will get their own cloth now and not have to buy). Look at the disparity in costs with crafting cloth ascended versus leather or plate, its silly high. I hope this change will balance it.

This argumentation ignores the current ascended recipes:

  • Crafting Light Armor need mostly clothes and a bit leather.
  • Crafting Medium Armor needs mostly clothes and a bit leather.
  • Crafting Heavy Armor needs mostly clothes and a bit steel.

Everyone needs mostly clothes to build his armor, but only cloth-weares get it.

WvW chats and mega server call for arms

1 thing I never understood in WvW:
Why are map and team chat doing the same?
- map chat should be this map (as it is)
- team chat should be all WvW maps (I.e. The whole current WvW team)

Maybe it’s a good idea to add:
Server shouts where each shout consumes 1 items shop ( or badge of honor shop) item
To avoid unwanted spam of stupid messages maybe not as free text but as fixed text: <WvW map on which this shout was used> needs urgent help
Into a world chat, that people can decide to see or not.

This becomes important with the mega server to reach your servers player as “go to LA and ask for help” no longer works.

To many people die as they fail to lookup boss-invulnerability buf. Then even more die in the attempt to rezz them. Going there is a stupid fail. Expecting that others risk their life to help them out of their failure is even more fail.

EotM is full of bad equipped low levels. Nevertheless they are the first to run to a champ and attack them melee. Resulting in their dead before even all reached the boss. Stay back till high levels that do not die on one hit took the aggro. Even better are the ones that run to the champ when the commander asked to clean the arrow cards first. I find it absolute sufficient to revive them after rewards are collected by the ones that fail less.

Another tip: If you are a low level that die fast: use a range weapon and attack the boss from a place inside the later conquest circle, this way you make sure that in case of dead you lie inside the conquest circle improve your chance to get revive before conquest a lot.

  • Increase the distance between the “contribution popup” (as in hearts of Maguma and WvW) and the “chests on right side”.
    I always get the contribution popup when I want to loot my chests.
  • Add a hot-key (assignment possibility) to loot the chests on the right.

Only a WvW-player wonders why he isn’t in Lion Arch anymore when he logs in.

Only a WvW-player wonders, why the hell do the people in his home town now chat in a foreign language.

Only a WvW-player is surprised that an enemy he partied on the battle field now stand beside him in his home-town.

Only a WvW-player ask himself after this happened, if his team is now that bad, that the enemies even invaded his hometown.

Only a WvW wonders what he is fighting for anymore, after an passing-by explained him that his home-world got merged together with all his enemies into the united nations of the mega-server.

population imbalance (and emptiness of most maps most of the time) is what killed WvW, not the BL. The new BLs just had the problem, that to few people for the smaller old BL maps are much to few people for larger new maps.

The thing we urgently need in my view is map-capacity fits player-numbers, neither to much map such that WvW degenerates to a PvE(D)-race nor to few map such that you sit in queue when you want to play.

If their balance work solve this WvW-problem, WvW get a change to restart, if not all they do is useless.
